The visual raw material is exceptional \u2013 938 never published \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/taylor-white.library.mcgill.ca\/?page_id=17#jumpz\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0071a1\" class=\"has-inline-color\">scientific portraits<\/span><\/a>\u201d of&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/taylor-white.library.mcgill.ca\/?page_id=1258\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0071a1\" class=\"has-inline-color\">animals<\/span><\/a>,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/taylor-white.library.mcgill.ca\/?page_id=1237\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0071a1\" class=\"has-inline-color\">birds<\/span><\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/taylor-white.library.mcgill.ca\/?page_id=1133\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0071a1\" class=\"has-inline-color\">fish and reptiles<\/span><\/a>, commissioned by British jurist&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/taylor-white.library.mcgill.ca\/?page_id=53\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0071a1\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Taylor White<\/span><\/a>&nbsp;(1701-1772) and accompanied by original observations written both on the images themselves, and in over 700 manuscript notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Taylor White collection is a unique assemblage and a testament to the passion of an eighteenth-century&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/taylor-white.library.mcgill.ca\/?page_id=17#jumpn\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0071a1\" class=\"has-inline-color\">naturalist<\/span><\/a>&nbsp;who understood the importance of accurate portrayal for the classification of the wonders of creation. It provides a unique entr\u00e9e to the work of the gentleman naturalist, a citizen scientist of the Enlightenment, at the intersection of the age of exploration and the burgeoning science of&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/taylor-white.library.mcgill.ca\/?page_id=17#jumpta\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0071a1\" class=\"has-inline-color\">taxonomy<\/span><\/a>. The White collection is also a resource for the study of the role of artists and patrons in the creation of scientific images, and an important contribution to the legacy literature of natural history and biosystematics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Taylor White\u2019s \u201c<\/strong><strong>Paper Museum<\/strong><strong>\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For almost forty years from the mid-1730s until his death in 1772, the British jurist and naturalist Taylor White commissioned paintings of birds and beasts from the best animal painters of the day. Unpublished in his lifetime, White\u2019s \u201cpaper museum\u201d was preserved by the family until acquired by Dr Casey Wood in 1927 for the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mcgill.ca\/historicalcollections\/library-archival\/blacker-wood\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0071a1\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Blacker Wood Collection<\/span><\/a>&nbsp;at McGill University, Montreal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While White\u2019s life as a lawyer and judge, as well as his long dedication to the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/taylor-white.library.mcgill.ca\/?page_id=17#jumpfh\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0071a1\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Foundling Hospital<\/span><\/a>&nbsp;as member of the Board and Treasurer, are documented in the public record, very little of his personal correspondence has been found. &nbsp;His collecting activities are known primarily through the evidence of the McGill collection and the occasional mention in diaries and letters of those who viewed his portfolios at his home in London, or through chance remarks in the correspondence of others, like&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/adb.anu.edu.au\/biography\/solander-daniel-2677\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0071a1\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Daniel Solander<\/span><\/a>,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.biographi.ca\/en\/bio\/banks_joseph_5E.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0071a1\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Joseph Banks<\/span><\/a>, or&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gilbertwhiteshouse.org.uk\/gilbert-white\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#0071a1\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Gilbert White<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013Dr Victoria Dickenson, Principal Investigator<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Taylor White research project focuses on the documentation and analysis of a unique \u201cpaper museum\u201d created over a period of nearly forty years by an individual focused on the great taxonomic enterprise of the eighteenth century that laid the foundation for our current understandings of nature and ecology.
